Elon Musk's AI startup xAI is under scrutiny as it plans to utilize 15 gas turbines to power its ambitious "Colossus" supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee. An operating permit obtained from the Shelby County Health Department allows for continuous turbine operation from June 2025 to June 2030. This decision has sparked significant environmental concerns, particularly regarding the emissions produced by the aging turbines.
These 20-year-old turbines are known to emit hazardous air pollutants (HAP), including formaldehyde, at levels that exceed the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) annual limit of 10 tons for a single source. The situation is further complicated by the fact that the turbines have been operational since summer 2024 without any public notification or regulatory oversight. Eric Hilt, a representative from the Southern Environmental Law Center, has raised alarms about the lack of accountability regarding emissions from these turbines, emphasizing the need for greater transparency and environmental protection in the region.
